In this article, I will present a summary on cosmetics terms, which will increase the value and convenience of cosmetics to people undergoing difficulties in deciding what subsidiary material or bottle to use. The usage of each different subsidiary material types is also shown below, so if you are planning to newly enter the cosmetics market pay full attention.

The beauty industry production is based on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing), in which the manufacturer and distributer are divided. It is because it is difficult to manage the equipment that manufactures all products. In result, the distributer focuses on planning the concept, while the manufacturer focuses on producing high quality items. However, even at these cosmetics company, they do not manufacture their own bottle or subsidiary. The reason is because there is a difference between the manufacturing method. I have chosen some terms that are frequently used when purchasing these products.

When ordering cosmetics subsidiary materials, the largest difficulty you will face is the standard of bottles. Information on the standards are explained in the previous article so I will just talk about it briefly. A bottle’s purpose is to contain something, so the capacity of the bottle is important. I’m sure everyone is aware of that. If you are planning to export, it is important you do some research on the measurement of the volume used in the target country and sell the bottle that matches the measurement used there. It is also important to know the size of the inlet. Although they look alike, they differ slightly by different manufacturing companies, so it is essential to check the diameter of the inlet and height. It might be difficult to understand for normal customers because it is a kind of information that they haven’t encountered before. There are a variety of materials used for bottles and subsidiary materials. They all have their own feature that distinguishes them from each other. However, for better understanding, I will just talk about only a few that are mostly used.
1. PE (Polyethylene)
Bottles made with Polyethylene have a high rate of oxygen blocking, which prevents the oxidation of the liquid inside. Also, due to their high durability against chemicals, they are used for high concentration cleaners. PE can be divided into two depending on the density: LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) and HDPE (High Density Polyethylene). The higher the density, the cloudier and harder the surface becomes. LDPE has flexibility, so is utilized for bottle subsidiary tubes.
2. PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate)
PET is the material mainly used to manufacture bottles. It is noticeable that most of the bottle shaped products we know are made out of PET, even by just looking at a few daily products.
3. PP (Polypropylene)
PP has excellence in chemical resistance and is easily colored therefore are frequently used to manufacture bottle caps. Caps for tube heads, pump heads and spray heads are all produced with PP.
Recently, inquiries on bottle shapes have increased due to the rise of demand for hand sanitizers, so I would like to add a term that represents the shape of a bottle.
Boston round bottle
Boston round is used when explaining a roundly shaped bottle. The diameter of the bottle is the same from the bottom up to the shoulder of the bottle, and the inlet of the bottle has a smaller diameter like the image above. It is a general shape for glass or plastic bottles. A Boston round bottle has an advantage of having sufficient space to attach labels around.

1. General cap<!--[if !vml]-->
When thinking of plastic caps or bottle caps, this image would be the first to pop up in your mind. Without any extra features, it is mainly used to prevent spilling. They are used cream or powder type items. Cream has a high viscosity so is stored in low and wide bottles. You can use the cream easily even with just one finger; therefore, a general cap is suitable. The reason why powder type products match with these caps is because the bottle is a jar shape. The powder is often used after putting a small amount in the cap, so if the cap was another type it might have caused inconvenience.
2. Dropper type<!--[if !vml]-->
Dropper type subsidiary materials are easily seen with basic cosmetics. Especially, highly concentrated products like a functional ample. It is easy to control the amount used and has a luxurious feeling so can be used for luxury cosmetics package.
3. Flip top cap, Press cap
The size of bottles with either a flip top cap or a press cap would need to be portable enough, so that squeezing the bottle with one hand is possible. The bottle used with these caps of course has to be soft and squeezable. The thickness of a lotion is perfect to use. However, if the liquid is waterier than that, it would cause the liquid coming out all at once and making a mess.
4. Pump (Foam pump)
A pump is used with large capacity sticky liquid like gel. The way it works is by using the pressure difference, so it is best when used with a deep bottle that can contain more than 500ml. The diameter of the tube decides the amount of liquid pumped out. In order to use these pumps with small bottles it is better using small straight pumps rather than the lotion pumps shown in the image above. Foam pump, which is a special kind of pump, is quite popular these days. After adding soap liquid inside the bottle, foam is created itself by the foam pump every time it is used. This makes it easy for kids to use also.
Spray, unlike pump, is a cosmetics subsidiary material item used with thin liquid. There is a tiny hole that makes a widespread dispense possible. The product on the image is mostly used with bottles that are able to contain less than 250ml. For bottles larger than 250ml, it is better using trigger spray. The larger the size, the heavier the weight, therefore, the trigger spray makes it easier to carry the bottle and hold it in hand.
